Two Wheels, No Permission: Why the Bike Wins

I rode my bike for miles the other day. No engine, no charge port, no gas station line — just me, the road, and my own legs doing the work. And it got me thinking about the actual ranking here, because it’s not close.

1. The Bike

Nothing beats it. No fuel cost, no charging wait, no emissions, no traffic jam you’re stuck sitting in — you just go. It’s the most direct, most honest way to move through the world: powered by you, answerable to nobody. That’s the whole Just Unicorn ethos on two wheels. Run wild, literally.

There’s also something a bike gives you that no car can: you actually feel the miles. You notice the hill, the wind, the neighborhood you’d normally blow past at 40 mph. It keeps you connected to where you actually are instead of sealed off from it.

2. Electric Cars

Respect where it’s due — electric is a real step up from gas. According to the EPA, EVs are typically responsible for significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than a comparable gasoline car, even accounting for the electricity used to charge them. Brands like Tesla have made that case mainstream. If you need four wheels, electric is the better call, no argument.

But it’s still a car. Still a machine between you and the road. Still something you have to plug in, wait on, and depend on infrastructure for.

3. Gas Cars

Last place, and it’s not close. The EPA estimates a typical gas passenger car emits roughly 4.6 metric tons of CO2 every year. Loudest, dirtiest, most expensive to keep running, most tied to a fuel line you don’t control. It gets you there, sure — but at the highest cost in every direction: money, environment, and how disconnected it makes the ride feel.

The Real Point

This isn’t really about vehicles. It’s about how much say you have in your own movement. A bike answers to nobody but you. That’s worth more than horsepower.
